High-Tech Farmington Company Announces Massive Expansion
The company will manufacture components critical in turning water into hydrogen fuel, which is seen as a green form of energy.
FARMINGTON, CT — A local high-tech company's soon-to-be expanded role in the clean energy scene was celebrated Wednesday with several state and national leaders present.
Mott Corp., located at 75 Spring Lane, Farmington, hosted Gov. Ned Lamont, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Rep. Jahanna Hayes, D-5th District, among others, on Wednesday for the official announcement of it's expansion plans, plans tied to the production of a green form of hydrogen fuel.
Those plans include creating a new, 65,000-square-foot facility in Farmington, an operation that will allow the company to hire 100 more high-tech workers.

In an announcement Wednesday, Mott Corp. said this investment is measured in the "tens of millions of dollars" and it will quadruple Mott's production capacity.
Currently, Mott specializes in "filters and fluid flow products," with its wares being utilized in the manufacturing processes of several large companies.

Its clients include such well-known entities as NASA, Samsung, the U.S. Navy, General Electric and Proctor & Gamble, among other firms, according to Mott's website.
With Wednesday's announcement, Mott officials said the expansion will allow the company to better serve the growing, green hydrogen manufacturing industry.
Hydrogen is, more and more, being regarded as an environmentally friendly source of energy for such entities as transportation, manufacturing and heating of homes.
Green hydrogen, however, is called such because it is manufactured from water, not fossil-fuel sources, through a process called "electrolysis."
This is where Mott Corp. comes in.
The Farmington company is a "global leader in producing ultra-thin, porous metal sheets, which are a critical component in the generation of green hydrogen," Mott Corp. wrote in a statement.
Those thin, metal sheets made by Mott are a necessary component in the manufacturing process for hydrogen, which Mott said demand of which is expected to increase five-fold by 2050.
So, to put it simply, Mott will make the key piece of manufacturing devices that extract hydrogen from water (essentially removing the "H" from the "H2O").
Boris Leven, Mott Corp.'s chief executive officer, said his company's growth will also put Connecticut further on the map in the growing, sustainable energy industry.
"This investment will bolster Connecticut’s role as a home for innovation in clean energy, one of the fastest-growing industries there is,” said Levin in a statement. “Mott has pioneered unique technology that the world’s leading energy producers need to generate green hydrogen, and the new facility will quadruple our production capacity. We’re able to do that in part because, as an employee-owned company, we’re able to recruit the best talent – and give our employees a share in our success."
Connecticut's state and national leaders agreed, saying Mott Corp. is an example of the kind of industries the state should be ready to embrace.
“Mott is helping lead Connecticut’s growth as an advanced manufacturing hub, and creating jobs for our communities,” said Lamont. “We are proud to celebrate Mott’s expansion and are committed to supporting advanced manufacturing in our state.”
“The expansion of Mott Corporation is an enormous win for Connecticut and for bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.,” said Blumenthal.
Prior to Wednesday's big announcement, all that was known publicly was the Farmington Plan & Zoning Commission's approval of a rezoning proposal at the site to facilitate the expansion.
That rezoning impacted 44,151 square feet of the 65,000-square-foot project.
At the Jan. 9 PZC meeting, Mott said the new facility would work on two shifts, five days a week.
The rezoning proposal had also received the blessing of the Farmington Economic Development Commission earlier this year.
