FARMINGTON, CT — Here are some recent notable achievements for college students from Farmington, as reported by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • The Department of Psychological Science at Eastern Connecticut State University held its 2017 Summer Research Institute on May 18-24 on the Eastern campus. This year's institute involved 10 undergraduate students and focused on the various factors that influence healthy eating. The institute was led by professors Jenna Scisco and Joseph Dracobly. Participants from Farmington were Michael Tuttle, a Pre-Social Work major whose independent study was titled "The Impact of Label Type on Perceived Healthiness and Label Comprehension," and Courtney Welch, a Health Sciences major whose independent study was titled "Effects of Store Brand vs. National Brand on Visual & Taste Preference."

Springfield College, Springfield MA

  • Elise Montes of Unionville earned a bachelor's of art degree in English from Springfield College for studies completed in 2017.
  • Springfield College has named three students from Farmington to the dean's list for academic excellence for the spring 2017 term. They are Monique Marcelino, Elise Montes and Michelle Erlikh. Criteria for selection to the dean's list requires that the student must have a minimum semester grade point average of 3.500 for the semester.

University of Vermont, Burlington VT

  • Emily Pareles has been named to the dean's list for the sping 2017 semester at the University of Vermont. Pareles, from Farmington, is majoring in Anthropology in the College of Arts & Sciences. To be named to the dean's list, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school.

Wesleyan University, Middletown CT

  • A pair of Farmington students graduated from Wesleyan University on May 28, 2017: Daniel Bachman, BA in English; and Jonas Katkavich, BA in Government.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • Ian Shusdock of Farmington, a member of the class of 2017 majoring in computer science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), was a member of a student team that recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Budapest. The project was titled Adaptive Neural Network Usage in Computer Go. In their project summary, the students wrote, "The goal of our project was to take some of the techniques that make AlphaGo so powerful, and integrate them with a less resource intensive artificial intelligence."
