The upcoming vote on a new high school in Farmington has ushered in an unexpected season of political fighting. With so many people with skin in the game, the stakes are high and passions raised. Unfortunately, the process appears to be getting weighed down with innuendo and infighting. This can be hard to navigate in a small town like Farmington.
From my vantage point this situation provides a rare opportunity to model democracy in action for our children without the divisiveness that so often accompanies it. Isn’t it great to watch ideas compete in the public arena? I love seeing the signs both for and against the high school. I enjoy hearing about neighbors so passionate about the cause that they are willing to take time to knock on doors. If we can debate without division, it is something we all can be proud of, no matter what our viewpoint on the new school.
Secondly, it is important to acknowledge that there is much we agree upon. Whether for or against the high school, we all love and support our kids and our town, and we all want to be wise with our money. These are ideas and beliefs we can unite around.

Finally, it might not be a bad idea to acknowledge that the other side may have a valid point (or two for that matter). The statement of need from the Board of Education has made clear there are some serious problems in the high school that need addressing. At the same time, it is fair to be concerned about costs and the safety of our children during the build. Both are valid points.
After Thursday, our town will need to unite around the decision we have made. If it’s a yes, let’s make this the best high school it can be so that all will know it was worth the $135 million invested. If it’s a no, let’s go back to the drawing board and find a plan that will fix the real problems that exist in a way that makes sense for the majority. Let’s fight hard and fair, in a manner that shows love for our neighbors and our beloved town. Our children are watching.
