I had it brought to my attention from a reader why we have people call with sightings and nothing more and is there more people can do? The reason we ask for calls with sightings is when Zoey is spotted, her owner hires a tracking dog that will track Zoey's scent in the area she was spotted. When the dog picks up a strong scent of where she was, we set up a feeding station and humane trap. The trap is a wire crate that is covered in brush and camouflaged so Zoey would feel safe to go in. There is food and water set outside the trap with broth or food with a high scent to lead to trap and food set in the back of trap. There are also marshmallows scattered around for raccoon's (who knew the loved marshmallows) and seed for squirrel's to keep them out of trap. When Zoey goes in the trap and steps on a plate the door will close and Zoey will be safe. Volunteers go several times during the day and night to check the trap. There are also camera's set up on tree's that have motion detectors, so if Zoey or anything walks by we can see it! The reason NOT TO CALL OR CHASE Zoey is because she won't come and she will get scared away and go to another location. It can take a couple of weeks for Zoey to feel comfortable to eat from the feeding area. She needs to know she's safe. If she does leave the area and is spotted somewhere else, we can move the feeding station and trap. THAT'S WHY SIGHTINGS ARE KEY!!!! PLEASE CALL 860-716-3370 WITH ANY SIGHTINGS!
