Why Does my Teen Play Video Games

Steven Cessario, founder of CT Youth Mentoring & Coaching, provides an excerpt with a unique perspective about teens and video gaming.

Video games have become very popular among many age groups especially teenagers. It is common for teenagers to spend hours playing video games, particularly games with violence, sex, criminal behavior, and drugs.  This is a huge concern for many parents.

One parent says, “My kid is so lazy, all he does is play video games in the basement! I don’t know what to do.”

Many adults tend to believe video games are isolating, a waste of time and antisocial, but research has found most young people described video games as fun, exciting, something to do when they’re bored, and to spend time with friends. Surprisingly research also suggested many youths say violent content is not the main draw. Young boys are interested in playing violent video games in order to compete and win. Violent video games can be similar to “rough-housing” play that boys engage in as part of normal development. It can be seen as another outlet for competition and status or to establish a hierarchy in the group (Olson CK. “Children's Motivations for Video Game Play in the Context of Normal Development”).
