Some recent notable accomplishments by college students who live in Glastonbury.

GLASTONBURY, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Bates College, Lewiston ME

  • Bates College graduated 469 students from 36 states and 36 countries on May 26, 2019. Cumulatively, the Class of 2019 performed 80,000 hours of community service, exemplifying Bates' commitment to community learning and civic action. Eli Cooper, of Glastonbury, graduated after majoring in economics and minoring in Asian studies at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Cooper, the child of Mr. and Mrs. Colin H. Cooper, is a 2015 graduate of Taft School. Cooper was also inducted into the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society, an organization which honors graduating seniors who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or have received special nomination from the faculty for outstanding academic achievement in their junior and senior years, and who have participated in a varsity sport for a minimum of three years. Max Hummel, of Glastonbury, graduated after majoring in economics and minoring in Chinese at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Hummel, the child of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Hummel, is a 2015 graduate of Glastonbury High School.

Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester NY

  • Soowon Moon of Glastonbury graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in May 2019 with a BS in web and mobile computing. RIT conferred some 4,200 degrees this academic year at all its campuses-including in Croatia, Dubai, Kosovo and China. The university held its 134th annual commencement celebration in May.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • Three Glastonbury residents were among 1,598 students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) named to the university's Dean's List for academic excellence for the spring 2019 semester: Catherine Matyas, a member of the class of 2019 majoring in biomedical engineering; Austin Buck, a member of the class of 2020 majoring in biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering; and Renee Dorer, a member of the class of 2020 majoring in mechanical engineering. The criteria for the WPI Dean's List differs from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean's List by the amount of work completed at the A-level in courses and projects.
