Doctor in the House? Glastonbury Man Saved at UConn Football Game

A St. Francis doctor stepped in from the stands to save a Glastonbury man at a UConn football game.

When Jim Nolan of Glastonbury suffered a massive heart attack at a UConn football game last month, fellow fan Dr. Steven Wolf stepped in to help save his life.

Nolan collapsed shortly after entering Rentschler Field for the game against North Carolina State. Wolf, Chairman of Emergency Medicine at St. Francis Hospital, happened to be in the stands at the time. When he heard the call “Is there a doctor in the house?” he immediately went to Nolan’s aid.

Working with paramedics and East Hartford Firefighters on the scene, he treated Nolan with IV fluids, aspirin and nitroglycerin before confirming the diagnosis with an EKG: The main artery to the front of Nolan’s heart was completely blocked.

Wolf then made a phone call to alert the team of heart specialists at St. Francis Hospital that Nolan was on his way via ambulance. He told WTNH later that he didn’t think Nolan would survive.

About a half hour after arriving at the hospital, and less than an hour from the onset of symptoms, doctors at St. Francis had cleared the blockage. Nolan credits Wolf with saving his life.
