Eight Exceptional Women to Receive ‘Women in Business’ Awards

Hartford, Conn. (April 6, 2015) - The Hartford Business Journal will celebrate the achievements of eight accomplished business women at its 13th Annual Women in Business awards luncheon on Thursday, May 14, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the CT Convention Center in Hartford, Conn. This year’s honorees represent a variety of senior level executives, entrepreneurs and CEO’s who are leaders in their industries and play integral roles in the Greater Hartford community.

This year’s Women in Business honorees are:

  • Carolyn Bligh, Principal, Bligh Graphics, LLC
  • Susan Herbst, President, University of Connecticut
  • Mary Ellen Jones, Vice President of Sales, Pratt & Whitney
  • Kristen Roberts, Vice President of Public Relations & Community Investment, Comcast
  • Lisa Schwartz, Vice President, Integrity Merchant Solutions
  • Catherine Smith, Commissioner, State of Connecticut Economic and Community Development
  • Nivea Torres, Superintendent of Schools, CT Technical High School System
  • Carol Wallace, Chairman, President & CEO, Cooper-Atkins Corporation

During this year’s luncheon, Hartford Symphony Orchestra will introduce Fanfare for the Hartford Woman. This first of its kind competition, sponsored by the Orchestra, challenged aspiring composers to create special compositions to honor the Hartford Woman.

Fanfare for the Hartford Woman will serve as a companion piece to Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, and promote the power of women.

Women in Business luncheon guests will hear a recorded version of the three composition finalists and sit in on a conversation with Carolyn Kuan, music director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, moderated by Ronna Reynolds, EVP of The Bushnell and a 2007 Women in Business honoree.
