Glastonbury officials said "organic waste" accounts for approximately 30 percent of household items thrown away.

"By composting this waste, community members can generate a valuable soil amendment product for lawn care and gardening activities while reducing overall community refuse tonnage, increasing the recycling rate, and saving tax dollars. With that in mind, this program has been organized to provide a convenient opportunity for residents to implement composting practices in their homes," officials said in the annuncement.

The program is also designed to "increase public awareness of home composting options and the benefits of using compost to improve or maintain high quality soil," they added.

As a Silver Certified community through the Sustainable CT program, Glastonbury has been working to achieve a 60 percent recycling and waste diversion goal by 2024.

Goals are also to reduce storm water runoff (water that does not soak into the ground and can cause erosion and transport pollutants to local waterways) and to conserve water to use on a lawn/garden or wash patio furniture and gardening tools.

Questions about the program can be directed to the Refuse Division at (860) 652-7772 or Phyllis.delaite@glastonbury-ct.gov.
