Glastonbury Health Department Provides Best Practices For Mosquito Season
Officials advise wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, checking property for areas of standing water.

Mosquito season is upon us and the Glastonbury Health Department has provided some best practices to prevent mosquito bites AND help prevent mosquito breeding in the Glastonbury community.

Protect Yourself / Your Family From Mosquito Bites by...
- Using appropriate chemical repellents. Those containing DEET, Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are most effective.
- Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants and treating clothing and gear
- Checking your property for areas of standing water, (which may invite mosquito breeding), and remove them where possible
- AVOIDING:
- The outdoors in the evening and early morning hours when mosquitoes are most active
- Tall grasses and weeds
- Shaded, humid areas with little or no breeze

- Clean your gutters so that water runs freely
- Repair screens and windows to keep mosquitoes out of your home
- Dispose of old tires, which can breed thousands of mosquitoes
- Tip / empty outdoor containers that hold water - e.g. pots, buckets, children's toys
- Change water in outdoor pet bowls and bird baths weekly
- Cover unused swimming pools
