Glastonbury Says Goodbye to Town Center Tree

The scheduled removal of the massive white fir in Glastonbury's town center has begun.

 

The end has come for Glastonbury’s town center tree.

The massive concolor fir, also known as a white fir, was scheduled for removal last fall but was given one last holiday season as part of the town’s annual tree-lighting ceremony. The fir was first planted in town center in the 1970’s.

Crews from Northern Tree Service tree removal were in town center Thursday morning stripping branches from the old tree’s trunk.

The diseased fir is had been showing its decline in the last two years, with marked discoloration and significant loss of its needles, according to the town.

The tree is being cut down and its root system will be dug up. However, a new 15-foot concolor fir will be planted in its place, growing into a new focal point for the town center.
