Glastonbury Turning Waste Oil Into Clean Trucks

Waste oils are a heat source in the wash-bay facility.

GLASTONBURY, CT — Did you know that Glastonbury's Fleet Maintenance Division is recycling waste oils as a heat source in its wash-bay facility?

It does.

In the past, Glastonbury paid a fee to dispose of these waste oils. But over the past two-plus years, town officials have created a system whereby it can recycle these chemicals into heat for powering town equipment.

As part of the development of Riverfront Park, town purchased the former Hallmark Tire building and, before demolishing the structure, town staffers salvaged a waste oil heater.

It was installed in the vehicle maintenance wash-bay in the Spring of2014. The wash-bay, located at the town’s vehicle maintenance facility on New London Turnpike, was previouslyheated primarily through a propane gas system.
