Poisonous Plant Identified In Area Of Glastonbury

A state agency has confirmed that a dangerous plant is growing in Glastonbury.

GLASTONBURY, CT — The presence of a poisonous plant has been detected in Glastonbury, according to state and local officials.

The Connecticut Agriculture Experiment Station recently confirmed the presence of Spotted Water Hemlock on a private piece of property in the Cedar Ridge area of Glastonbury.

"At this time, this is the only location where the town has verified the plant's presence. However, it is possible that SWH could be located elsewhere throughout the community," municipal officials said.

Spotted Water Hemlock is found in streams and waterways, local officials said. It is a member of the carrot family and resembles Queen Anne’s lace plants, they added.

"Most importantly, spotted water hemlock is toxic to people and animals. Therefore, residents are advised not to have contact with any part of the plant," local officials said. "Please be mindful to take precautionary measures for pets/animals on your property as well."

Municipal officials said that if anyone identifies Spotted Water Hemlock, or any other poisonous plant on a property, they should not come into contact with it. Residents should consult a landscaping professional for guidance on proper removal.

Excavation of the plant's root system may require a local permit, and the application of pesticide will require a pesticide permit from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, local officials said.

"The town of Glastonbury does not remove or remediate poisonous or invasive plants on private property," Local officials said. "However, town staff are happy to provide resources and contact information to ensure homeowners can access assistance and take necessary action."

Anyone who observes Spotted Water Hemlock on town-owned property can contact Glastonbury Tree Warden Greg Foran at 860-652-7686, and a staff member will evaluate the area of concern and take further action as applicable, local officials said.
