Quick guide: How these 5 parent habits work?
Actionable steps that can help you and your teen.
Use finesse.
No one wants to be talked at or lectured. Your teenage son wants you to be sensitive to what he is going through. Do your best to understand his side of things and genuinely listen without thinking what you’re going to say next. Most importantly, be aware of the tone and words used to talk with your son. A calm and understanding tone using constructive words work best.
Be flexible.

Being flexible doesn’t mean you’re letting your son do whatever he wants. It’s about give and take. Try to agree to something you don’t usually agree to, such as a later curfew or a trip. His desire for more independence is increasing and he will appreciate your loose hold.
Create a non-judgmental environment.

Do you know anyone who wants to be negatively judged? Negative judgment can be a harsh thing and may actually create a very self-conscious teenager. A positive and welcoming home starts with you. If your teen notices you’re patient with his mistakes, anger, and teen hormones he’ll feel secure and open up.
Consult rather than direct.
Consulting is all about advising and coaching. For some parents they’re not at the consulting level because it’s easy to get stuck directing and telling their teen what to do. That’s normal because your kids have looked to you for at least a decade wondering which way to turn. Someone who is good at consulting works well with others, has good communication skills, and has logical reasoning.
Stop and relax.
It’s easy to get caught up in the life you live. You work all day and then get home to make dinner for your kids. It seems like some days you have two jobs. So, in between the teen hormones, your boss’s requests and cooking, sit back and put your feet up. Make time every week to hang out with good friends and especially enjoy time alone.
