The thief jumped into what appeared to be a silver Honda CRV and the employee grabbed onto the driver's door handle, police said.
The driver then shifted the vehicle into reverse and cut the wheels in a "hard right direction," which caused the front left fender of the vehicle to brush up against the employee's legs, police said. The employee declined medical attention at the scene, police said.
The vehicle exited the parking lot onto Glastonbury Boulevard and traveled northbound on Main Street toward East Hartford.
Police said they have partial license registration plate information.
Police Wednesday were strongly advising members of the public to "never pursue an individual involved in a larceny such as this and never grab onto to a vehicle in motion in an effort to stop it."
