In Tuesday Sting, 7 Of 10 Glastonbury Stores Sell Alcohol To Minor

GLASTONBURY, CT — In recent compliance sting in Glastonbury, 70 percent of the stores visited sold alcohol products to an underage customer, police said.

The compliance check was conducted Tuesday and Glastonbury police released the results Thursday.

The Glastonbury Police Department’s Youth Unit conducted tobacco, vape and alcohol compliance checks at 17 retailers in town that sell either alcohol or vape or tobacco products. The checks were conducted in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection’s Liquor Control Division, the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and underage youth volunteers.

In all, 10 liquor retailers were checked for compliance and police said the following sold alcohol products to a youth volunteer:

  • O'Riley’s Wine & Spirit, 960 New London Turnpike
  • One Stop Spirit Shop, 339 New London Turnpike
  • Addison Fine Wine & Spirits, 802 Hebron Ave.
  • Cork’s Fine Wine & Spirits, 1320 Manchester Road
  • Paddy’s Spirit Shoppe, 2249 New London Turnpike
  • South Side Wine & Spirit, 1 Water St.
  • M&R Package Store, 2773 Main St.

A total of seven vape and tobacco retailers were checked for compliance. Police said the following sold vape or tobacco products to a youth volunteer:

  • 252 Smoke Shop, 227 Hebron Ave.
  • Shell, 556 Hebron Ave.

Enforcement action was handled by both the Glastonbury Police Department and the Department of Consumer Protection Liquor Control Agents. Retailers found violating state age laws may be fined by the state and could face suspension of their licenses.

The operation was funded by a Local Prevention Council Grant administered by Amplify and provided to the Glastonbury Community Action Partnership, which is "committed to working to prevent drug and alcohol misuse in the Glastonbury community."
