Accused Substitute Teacher Had No Criminal Record

Robert Klein, a Granby substitute teacher charged with sexual assault of Wells Road Intermediate School students, has no criminal background.

The Granby Public School substitute teacher arrested Sunday on charges of sexual assault had no criminal record, according to an affidavit filed at the Superior Court in Enfield.

Robert Klein, 62, was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and three counts of breach of peace.

Granby Police ran a criminal history check on Klein during the investigation and came up with a clean record.  Klein has also never registered with the Connecticut Sex Offender Registry.

"Obviously the employee has been suspended from any further substitute teaching assignments," Granby Superintendent Alan Addley said.  "He has been an employee substitute teacher in the district for several years."

The most recent alleged victim of Klein's inappropriate behavior told police she had heard of other incidents in the past.

The two witnesses  to the most recent occurrence told police Klein would look down their shirts while they did pushups during a gym class Klein was substituting for last year.

Superintendent Addley would not comment on whether similar allegations against Klein have been made in the past.

"We have notified the parents involved at Wells Road School regarding the situation," Addley said.

The charges against Klein are based on several incidents involving three female students.  Two students said they saw Kline looking down their shirts during a gym class last year, and the other  said  Klein touched her on the head, chest, lower back or buttocks when he was substituting at Wells Road Intermediate School on March 1.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, one of the girls said Klein touched her on two occasions on March 1. Two other girls, both of whom said they witnessed those incidents, reported that Klein had touched them inappropriately a year earlier.

Klein was arraigned Monday in Enfield Superior Court with no plea entered. He has been re-released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on April 13, 2011.
