Granby Man Seriously Injured After Stopping On I-91

State police said the 32-year-old man had stopped in the left lane after property fell from his vehicle.

GRANBY, CT — A Granby man was seriously injured early Tuesday after getting out of his vehicle on Interstate 91 North in East Windsor, according to state police.

The crash happened around 2:40 a.m. near Exit 45, state police said.

State police said the 32-year-old man had been driving on I-91 North when he stopped his vehicle in the left lane, facing the wrong way, after property fell from the vehicle.

The state police summary does not identify the make or model of the vehicle the man had been driving.

While the man was outside that vehicle, he was struck by a 2023 Kia Sorento traveling north, state police said.

The Kia was driven by a 22-year-old man from Springfield, Massachusetts, according to state police. He reported arm pain but refused medical treatment.

The pedestrian was taken by East Windsor EMS to Hartford Hospital with suspected serious injuries, according to the accident summary.

The Warehouse Point Fire District said firefighters were called around 2:45 a.m. to I-91 North between Exits 44 and 45. East Windsor Ambulance, East Windsor police and the Broad Brook Fire Department also responded, according to the fire district.

Fire officials said a Life Star helicopter was requested but later canceled.

State police said the Kia and the vehicle the pedestrian had been driving were both towed from the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who saw the crash, or anyone with dashcam video from the area at the time, is asked to contact Trooper First Class John Wilson at john.wilson@ct.gov.
