The Farmington Valley Health District is urging residents to test their home for radon gas, the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. The winter months are ideal for testing as homes are closed and the potential for radon gas to accumulate is greatest.
Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that is released from rock containing radioactive material. Radon gas can seep into home through foundation cracks and may reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings. Fortunately there is something all homeowners can do to protect themselves and their families from the second leading cause of lung cancer. All homes should be tested for radon and action should be taken to reduce high levels. Testing homes for radon is simple and inexpensive. The Farmington Valley Health District is offering residents of the Farmington Valley a FREE radon test kit (while supplies last). Radon test kits can also be ordered online from National Radon Program Services at http://sosradon.org/test-kitsor or from the American Lung Association of New England by calling 1-800 LUNG USA.
