On Sunday, January 27, 250 wrestlers from three different states, and over twenty different youth wrestling clubs, gathered in a gym in Killingly to measure themselves against each other. Team score was kept and Farmington Valley ’s own FishEye Wrestling Club, behind strong performances from Granby wrestlers, beat out Springfield , MA Youth (2nd) and North Andover , MA (3rd) to win the overall title. “This is the first Connecticut tournament we wrestled in that kept a team score,” said head coach Jeff Fernandes, “I’m happy to see all of the kids’ hard work paying off.” FishEye’s march to the team title was led by a total of four champions from Granby . Brothers Logan Fleming, Cooper Fleming, and Hunter Fleming combined for three individual titles with each brother winning all three of his matches. Each brother had two pins in the tournament. Ben Kibby also won a title, winning four matches and having two pins. Steven Muller placed second after winning two matches by pin. Caitlin Desautels won one match by pin and placed third while Addison Wilkey won two matches, including one victory over the first place finisher, and placed third. Baily Levine also wrestled tough and ended up placing 4th. “We focus on improving each week by working hard and being dedicated,” said Fernandes. All of the wrestlers are gearing up for the state qualifiers and championships, which are being held February 17th and 24th.
