EAST GRANBY – Lovers of exquisite art in small packages have a treat in store Tuesday, Aug. 26, when Bridgeport-based artist Dalton Ghetti will offer lectures at the East Granby Public Library, 24 Center St., from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. for a discussion of his creations.
Ghetti, whose day job is carpentry, carves common pencils into detailed sculptures including letters of the alphabet, animals, a detailed cottage with a fence and a bust of Elvis Presley.

“I just use a razor blade and a sewing needle for about 90 percent of the work,” Ghetti said. “Once in a while something breaks before I can finish it. I made a display of things that broke over the years, called ‘Cemetery.’ They’re very fragile, and my motto is ‘The Slower, the Better.’ The slower I work, the better my chances of finishing. When you push a little harder, that’s when they break.”
Ghetti said he will explain what he does at the East Granby Public Library Aug. 26, and will bring very large images of his work, so people can see them.
“I will tell my story, including how I started, and answer questions,” he said.
Many years ago, when Ghetti first started showing his work to friends, he made the decision not to offer it for sale.
“I’m not doing it for money,” he said. “I do it for the simple pleasure of making a beautiful thing. It’s a hobby.”
The artworks are framed in wooden boxes, he said.
“I usually transport them on pillows, and have blankets to soften the bumps. Every time I go over a pothole, I think, ‘There goes one.’”
