“Her fellow Marines liked to say that Reckless was the only horse to come out of the Korean War with fame and a name. In reality, a small Jeju pony acquired in the fall of 1952 to haul ammunition uphill to front line gun sites, she soon became the revered warhorse of the Marine Fifth Regiment, her courage and undaunted efforts raising spirits and saving many lives.”
“An integral part of the regiment’s Recoilless Rifle Platoon, Reckless served for two years in the war zone, through skirmishes and firefights and, most memorably, in the spring of 1953, the savage Battle for Outpost Vegas. In that bloody siege, working with little rest through three days and nights, she hauled ammo wherever it was needed. Traveling by herself between the ammo dump and the gun sites, in one day alone she packed more than 9,000 pounds of explosives. For two wounds sustained in battle, she was awarded two Purple Hearts.”
