Boys Basketball: Granby Memorial Bounced by Notre Dame-Fairfield in Class M Tourney
Bears were tied at halftime before No. 6 Notre Dame pulled away in the third quarter.

The boys basketball team’s season came to a close Thursday evening with a 75-60 loss to No. 6 Notre Dame-Fairfield in the second round of the state Class M tourney.
“ND-Fairfield was a tough team (very tough), but I believe we gave them everything they could handle,” Granby Memorial High head coach Wally Hansen wrote in an e-mail. “We were tied at halftime and had some opportunities in the second half but they turned us over a bit too much with their full-court man pressure.”
Nick Mazzotta scored 20 points, Carlin Champion added 16 and Mike Noyes chipped in 14 for the 22nd-seeded Bears (11-12). But they could not match Notre Dame’s 6’5”, 230-pound center Arkiel Miles, who had 19 points, most of which came during a critical third quarter run.
“We kind of ran out of gas,” Hansen said. “I’m very, very proud of how our guys played...we left it all out there.”
Earl Coleman scored 18 points in the winning effort, while Danny Upchurch had 15, C.J. Davidson had 10 and Jake Heaton had 6 for Notre Dame (17-4), which will face No. 3 Kaynor Tech (20-2) in the quarterfinals on March 12.
Mazzotta, for his part, had a great final game in a Bears uniform, as he grabbed 15 rebounds to go along with his game-high 20 points. Clark had 10 rebounds, while Noyes had 6 assists and 5 steals.
