Granby, East Granby Schools Receive High Marks from ConnCAN

Give both the Granby and East Granby school districts gold stars for their respective report cards.

Indeed, the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN), a New Haven-baed nonprofit advocacy group formed to reduce the public education achievement gap, released its grades on local school districts and both Granbys passed with flying colors by receiving an A- for its overall rating, which was based in large part on student performance on the Connecticut Mastery Test and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test.

Granby and East Granby rated 12th (87.6 percent) and 19th (85.3 percent), respectively, out of 133 school districts to receive ratings. Avon received the top overall ranking.

The group also assigned letter grades to 1,000 Connecticut public schools, including those located in Granby and East Granby.

Kelly Lane Intermediate School in Granby got an A and ranked 12th out of all 395 elementary schools to receive ratings the state; R.D. Seymour Elementary School in East Granby received an A- and ranked 57th. Wells Road Intermediate School in Granby received at B+ and ranked 77th.

At the middle school level, East Granby Middle School was in the top 10 percent, ranking 24th out of 242 schools, while Granby Memorial Middle School was 39th, both of which were good enough for an A-.

Wells Road and Kelly Lane in Granby were both also considered middle schools, as they go up to grade six, and they were ranked 25th and 33rd, respectively, in that category, also good for an A-.

At the high school level, Granby Memorial High was ranked 10th out of 170 schools, but only received a B+ for its performance, while East Granby High School was tied for 43rd and received a C+.

According to ConnCAN's website, the report cards are designed, in part, to "create transparency and awareness about how our public schools perform."Click here for the full results.
