CT Valley Views - Dr. Surita Rao-The “Condition” of Mental Health for our Youth in Today’s Society

Susan Regan, Host of CT VALLEY VIEWS met with Dr. Surita Rao,
Chairman and Director of Behavioral Health Services at St. Francis Care to
discuss some of the most prevalent factors effecting the mental well-being of
the young members of our society.  Key to
addressing these issues is the increasing need for a preemptive awareness by
parents to notice any modifications in their child’s habits or behavior and keep
an open dialogue with them to determine the cause.  External factors impacting personality
changes include stress from peer group interface, schoolwork, physical health
concerns, and internal family conflicts.

Open communication
with your child and primary care physician is important.  And, if the situation is not readily improved,
then the consideration that opiates (drug factors) may be involved and that an
appropriate mental health practitioner should be included in the support
group.  Without intervention, a child may
choose to self- remedy their problem creating further anxiety and unfortunate
consequences.
