Earthquake or Ground-Shimmy? School Board Meeting, Ron Roy Visits
Here are 5 things you need to know about what's going on in the area.

Good morning, Granbys! Today is Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011. There are 129 days left in the year. (Question: Should I scrap the countdown now that summer is waning? I mean, am I the only one who finds it a little depressing?)
The National Weather Service predicts another gorgeous day, with sunny skies and highs in the low 80s.
So, maybe the Mayans had something about the end of days taking place in 2012, what with yesterday's earthquake and the hurricane that's possibly walloping us on Saturday. That's two of the seven signs, no? Throw in the Red Sox two relatively recent World Series victories, then we're more than halfway there.

But let's make something clear: we have to come up with a different term than "earthquake" to describe yesterday's event in terms of the Farmington Valley. Indeed, the first question most people asked wasn't "Was anybody hurt?" or "How bad was the damage?" but instead was "Did you feel it?"
We call it an earthquake here; in San Francisco, they call it Tuesday. So, with that in mind, let's give it an appropriate description, like ground-shimmy. Feel free to use that one on me. I don't even need to sign a waiver for it. You're welcome.

Here's your Daily 5, which leads off with, naturally...
1. ... the earthqua - er, ground-shimmy. The excellent Southington Patch local editor Jason "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" Vallee wrote a piece on it that was updated throughout the day. Other local editors from the region, including The Granbys, contributed to the article.
2. The feasibility of the Granby school district offering full-day instead of half-day kindergarten, among other things, is on the agenda for the Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m. at the Central Offices.
3. Ron Roy, the author of the popular children's series "A to Z Mysteries" and the new "Calendar Mysteries" visits Granby at the Senior Center and Youth Services building at 7 p.m.
4. It's Wednesday, which means the East Granby Farmers' Market will be open for business. Here's a list of vendors that will set up shop today.
5. I was interviewing Granby Memorial High School's new athletic director, Ed Bobinski, when the earthqua - er, ground-shimmy hit. Neither one of us felt it. Anyway, look for a story featuring Bobinski, who previously was the AD and a physical education teacher at RHAM, within the next couple of days.
