East Granby Budget Sent to Referendum

The annual machine ballot budget referendum will take place on May 10 from 6 a.m.-8p.m. at the Senior/Community Center.

Voters will have their say on the proposed $18.48 million East Granby budget at the budget referendum May 10.

At the annual town meeting on Wednesday evening, no vote was taken on the Board of Finance's proposed budget. 

"The Board of Selectmen has already called for a ," First Selectman Jim Hayden said. "The vote will be on May 10."

This measure has been taken by the board for the past three years, according to Hayden, who said it extends the opportunity for residents to cast their votes.

The town meeting set the hours for voting, which will be from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Board of Finance’s recommended budget is $18,481,118, which reflects an increase of 1.6 percent over the current year. Under the proposed budget, the boards of selectmen and education budgets would increase 2.1 percent, the capital fund would increase 23.3 percent and the debt service would decrease by 28.8 percent. 

The total Board of Education budget totals $13.59 million and the general government, $4.115 million. 

Based on revenue projections, the tax rate would remain at 27.0 mills and there would not be an increase in property taxes.

“This year, the grand list grew by a very small percentage,” Board of Finance member David Kilbon said of the 0.4 percent increase. “We do anticipate that this year, if this budget is adopted, that there would not be a tax increase.”

Barring any major changes to property, Kilbon said taxpayers would more or less pay what they paid last year in taxes. 

The Board of Finance voted at the budget public hearing on April 12 to send the budget forward as presented, however with a minor transfer of funds from debt payment to the capital reserve fund. The transfer of $22,000 was taken from the debt payment and put into the capital reserve fund, as the debt service interest payments have decreased. The debt payment now reflects a total of $384,562 and the capital reserve fund has a total of $387,556.
