East Granby, Granby CAPT Scores Up, CMTs Mixed

Both districts still exceed state averages.

Standardized test scores are in for Suffield, and the district saw gains in CAPT scores, with mixed results for CMTs. Scores still exceed state averages.

The Connecticut Department of Education released the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) and the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) scores for all Connecticut school districts on Tuesday. 

On the CAPT test, which is given to 10th graders, East Granby students showed gains across the board. More than 79 percent of students reached goal in math (up from 75), 71 percent in science (up from 56), 66 percent in reading (up from 65) and 90 percent in writing (up from 86).

In Granby, more than 77 percent of students reached goal in math (up from 76), 78 percent in science (up from 73), 66 percent in reading (up from 60) and 81 percent in writing (down from 83).

However, the CMTs were a different story, with many scores fluctuating up or down a few points and a few significant drops.

In East Granby, for example, fourth-graders at or above goal in math dropped from 90 percent to 75 and in reading from 84 percent to 68. Grade five showed increases in all subjects. In sixth-grade, those writing at goal dropped from 76 percent to 63.

In Granby, fourth-grade writing dropped from 81 to 75 percent and fifth-grade reading fell from 83 percent to 76 meeting goal. Grade seven writing scores rose from 74 percent meeting goal to 82 percent.

The CMTs are administered to all students from grade three to grade eight. Students are tested in math, reading and writing, and in middle school, they are tested in science as well.

Students are labeled based on their performance. The labels, in descending order, are advanced, goal, proficient, basic and below basic.
