East Granby Selectmen Schedule Second Town Meeting, Referendum

New budget calls for 1.85 percent tax increase.

The East Granby Board of Selectmen, at its regular meeting Wednesday, set dates for a second Town Meeting and budget referendum.

The first referendum, which proposed a $19.07 million budget that called for for a 3.3 percent tax increase, was soundly defeated on Monday 590 to 423.

The second Town Meeting will be held May 16 at the at 7:30 p.m. to present a new $18.91 million budget, set Monday, that calls for a 1.85 percent tax increase - or .5 mills - that includes the following:

  • a $4.218 million - or a 2.5 percent increase - for general municipal operations;
  • a $14.1 million - or a 3.72 percent increase - for school operations;
  • a $415,556 for capital improvements; and
  • a $178,112 for debt service.

According to a press release from Town Hall, the revised budget reflects a reduction of $163,400 when compared to the budget which was defeated on May 8. The Board of Education budget was reduced $100,000, the General Government budget was reduced $13,400 and the Capital Reserve Fund Budget was reduced by $50,000.

Hayden said that on Wednesday, the board of selectmen, pursuant to the finance board’s directive, reduced its budget increase request from 2.82 to 2.5 percent - or $13,400 - by adjusting the insurance and police overtime line items.

According to Hayden, the second referendum, also at the Community/Senior Center, will follow on May 23.
