The Search for Union Soldier Ezra Chamberlin and the Confederate Sub H. L. Hunley

East Granby Historical Society will host a program on “The Search for Ezra Chamberlin and the Confederate Submarine H. L. Hunley” on Monday, March 19th, presented by State Archaeologist Nicholas Belantoni.  The program will take place at the East Granby Senior/Community Center beginning immediately after the 7PM business meeting.  The presentation is open to the public and is free of charge.

In 2003, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat, was raised from the depths of Charleston Harbor and seen for the first time in 136 years.  An archaeological investigation of the Hunley’s interior yielded a surprising item - the id tag of Ezra Chamberlin, Private, 7th Connecticut Infantry, from Killingly, Connecticut.  Was Chamberlin a spy?  A prisoner?  Just what was a Connecticut Yankee doing on a Confederate submarine?  While telling the story of the Hunley, Bellantoni will discuss the search for the fate of Private Chamberlin.
