Girls Basketball: Granby Memorial Falls to No. 1 Weaver in Quarterfinals

Bears finish with one of the best seasons in program history.

The girls basketball team’s season came to a close last night with a 53-45 loss to top-seeded Weaver in the state Class M quarterfinals in Hartford.

The Bears, who were seeded eighth in the tourney, finish with one of the finest seasons in school history, winning the most games ever in a year (20) and getting their first two victories in the Class M tournament.

In addition, Granby Memorial defeated Avon High twice; the two victories are believed to be the first-ever over the Falcons in girls basketball. One of the victories over Avon came in the consolation game of the NCCC tourney to give the Bears a third-place finish.

It was an impressive turnaround that few would have predicted for the Bears (20-6) after they were thrashed by eventual conference champion Ellington 63-38 on Jan. 17.

But head coach Dean Godin frequently said that the Ellington game served as a galvanizing moment for his team, which came together and won seven consecutive contests before falling to Suffield in the regular season finale.
