[Updated 4:45 p.m. Monday] Granby and East Granby Schools Closed Tomorrow

Classes canceled for another day as workers continue to try and restore power to both towns.

Schools in Granby and East Granby will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 1, and could be shuttered for even longer, as workers continue to try and restore power to CL&P customers in both towns, according to officials from both communities.

Granby's website has the announcement that schools are closed tomorrow, but will be open on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

As of 3:15 p.m., Monday afternoon, 96 percent of CL&P customers in Granby were still without power.

Granby Superintendent of Schools Alan Addley said that he hadn't made a determination as to whether to close schools on Wednesday, Nov. 2, but that he wasn't optimistic that schools would be open given the current state of affairs in town.

"I haven't heard anything that would make me think otherwise," said Addley, who had just met with CL&P officials Monday afternoon along with other town officials.

The issue wasn't just a matter of getting power back in town, according to Addley, who said that dangerous road conditions, including debris from fallen trees and downed power lines, made transporting children a risky proposition.

"We're going to take our time and make a decision tomorrow [as to whether to open schools Wednesday]," Addley said.

The decision to close schools in East Granby for Tuesday was made Sunday evening, according to First Selectman Jim Hayden. As of Monday afternoon, officials had not yet made a decision as to whether to open schools Wednesday.

"[School officials are] taking it on a day to day basis," First Selectman Jim Hayden said.

All of East Granby's CL&P customers are still without power as of Monday afternoon.

Hayden said that people should prepare to be without power for up to a week.

"That's just an educated guess," Hayden said. "We're not sure when [we're going to get power back]."
