Granby Memorial Boys Tennis Defeats Ellington/Somers

Bears improve to 2-3 on the year by edging a shorthanded Ellington/Somers squad.

The boys tennis team improved to 2-3 on the year by defeating the shorthanded Ellington/Somers co-op team 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Granby.

Indeed, the Bears caught Ellington/Somers while much of its team was on April vacation, according to Granby Memorial head coach Kevin Imbt said in a telephone interview.

“They were missing half of their team,”  Imbt said. “We face them again in May; I’m not sure how that will turn out.”

The results of the matches are as follows:

No. 1 Singles: Chandler Libby (G) def. Job Veskighul (E/S) 6-0, 6-0

No. 2 Singles: Andrew Parker (E/S) def. Tyler Downing (G) 3-6, 6-3, 6-1

No. 3 Singles: Cello Borgio (G) def. Jerry Xu (E/S) 6-4, 6-1

No. 4 Singles: Peter Marzo (G) def. Nick Greik (E/S) 6-1, 6-3

No. 1 Doubles: Kyle Laires and Justin Nicoletti (E/S) def. Matt O’Neil and Tim Ray (G) 6-4, 3-6, 7-6

No. 2 Doubles: Devin Smith and Joey Noyes (G) def. Joe Taft and Joe Korzeh (E/S) 6-3, 6-4

No. 3 Doubles: Nick Falwa and Kevin Sisco (E/S) def. Mike Main and Justin Kaiser 6-0, 6-2.

Both teams return to action on Friday, with Ellington/Somers facing Canton at home, while Granby Memorial faces Suffield, also at home. Both contests are set to begin at  3:45 p.m.
