Granby Summer Program Helps Prevent Summer Slide

It may have been summer vacation, but at Kelly Lane in Granby, school was in session for 106 kids and the teachers who were working overtime to ensure that come fall, those students were ready to go.

The district’s Summer School program offered students in grades 1 through 8 the opportunity to reinforce what was learned in the previous school year, helping some to catch up and others to prevent the summer learning slide.

Students come to the program either as part of a PPT decision or because their parents elect to enroll them, said program director Jen Miller, at a recent Board of Education meeting.

A much larger percentage of the students in the program were parent-initiated, Miller said. There were 18 Open Choice students enrolled in the program, Miller said.

In addition, enrollment was done from the previous year, Miller said. A survey of parents showed that those who didn’t attend indicated they felt their kids simply needed a break from school or would be away on vacation.

The program focuses on math, language arts, gym, art and technology. Miller said the program helped students maintain their learning and that parents frequently commented on helpful the structure was or their children.
