Pitching the Name of the Game for Granby Memorial Baseball

The Bears (2-0) have yielded just two runs in the first two games of the season.

The Granby Memorial High baseball team is enjoying a great start to the season.

Indeed, pitching has been the name of the game for the Bears (2-0), who have yielded just two runs in their first two games.

In the season opener on Wednesday, pitcher David Gottschalk hurled a complete-game, 3-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Coventry. Granby Memorial’s Alex Rochleau, Cody Varza and Gottschalk each scored in the victory.

The Bears followed that up with a 14-2 victory over East Windsor Thursday behind Matt Hartman’s six strong innings on the mound.

The strong start bodes well for Granby Memorial, which hopes to build on last year's team that went 13-9 overall, qualifying for the state Class M tournament, where it lost in the second round.

Granby Memorial’s next game is against Avon at home on Tuesday, April 10 at 3:45 p.m.
