Pleased To Meet You Granbys, Help Finding a Job, School Meet and Greet

Good morning, Granby and East Granby! Today is Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013. There are 126 days left in the year.

I'm your new editor. Pleased to meet you and I hope I do meet many of you very soon. 

I've been at Patch for almost 3 years, so though I'm new to you, I'm not new to the job. I've written about mill rates and Education Cost Sharing grants, new businesses, kids raising money for charity and just about everything else that goes on in towns like ours. 

But I did it all in Farmington, where I grew up, went to school, have children in school, get the mailers for candidates during campaign season and receive explanatory emails from the superintendent whenever potential crises arise. I started the job able to name the past five Town Council chairmen, knowing everyone's children and intimately familiar with the places, personalities and opinions of the town.

It was an incredibly comfortable way to be a reporter. 

But as you probably know, Patch was shaken up about two weeks ago and many sites were slated to be cut. As a result, the company was reorganized, people reassigned, and here I am.

The Granbys was chosen as one of the sites that would continue on. I attribute this first to the former editor (my husband)'s hard work to make it great and to your receptiveness. 

But I don't know anything about Granby or East Granby - or, very little, so I'm going to need your help. I'll tell you a little about me and you tell me (please?) something about your town.

About me: 

I'm 31 and live in Farmington. I have a soon-to-be 9-year-old boy and a 10-year-old (just got the preteen attitude) girl. About a year ago I married former Granbys Patch editor Ted Glanzer and we have an infant whom you'll see me toting around.

1. Granby Public Schools will hold the Preschool & Kindergarten Meet & Greet today at 4 p.m. at Kearns School.

2. The Good Works Project, a ministry out of Wesley United Methodist Church in East Windsor, is looking for volunteers and at the same time offering its services to local people who need help finding a job.

3. Longtime Farmington Valley Chorale Director Don Smith passed away recently. He served as the group’s director for more than 20 years, according to his obituary.

4. FOCUS Center for Autism is hosting a fundraiser at the Red Stone Pub in Simsbury tonight. Here are the details.  

5. The East Granby Registrar of Voters will hold a ballot lottery to determine the order in which candidates’ names will appear on the November ballot. The drawing will be held Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Senior / Community Center at 20 Center St., East Granby.
