Second East Granby Budget Referendum is Today

Revised $18.91 million budget calls for a 1.85 percent tax increase.

East Granby residents will go out to the polls for a second referendum, this time to determine whether to approve an $18.91 million combined town and schools operating budget.

The polls will be open at the from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The total budget calls for a 1.85 percent, or .5 mills, tax increase and includes the following:

  • $4.218 million — or a 2.5 percent increase — for general municipal operations;
  • $14.1 million — or a 3.72 percent increase — for school operations;
  • $415,556 for capital reserve; and
  • $178,112 for debt service.

The revised budget reflects a reduction of $163,400 when compared to the budget which was defeated on May 8. The Board of Education budget was reduced $100,000, the General Government budget was reduced $13,400 and the Capital Reserve Fund Budget was reduced by $50,000.

A second referendum was necessitated after the first referendum calling for a $19.07 million budget was soundly defeated. Out of 1,013 votes cast, 590, or 58 percent, were against the spending measure that called for a 3.3 percent tax increase, while 423, or 42 percent, were in its favor.
