The total of the bids, plus abatement, soft costs (i.e. architect, owner contingency engineers, etc.), construction manager and construction contingency comes to about $11 million, according to First Selectman Jim Hayden.

The town allocated $11.8 million at referendum for the project, which is $800,000 under budget after the bidding process. As such, numerous alternates, including the replacement of the playscape at Seymour, installing a dehumidifier in the kitchen at Allgrove, replacing windows, upgrading the electrical systems and renovating the toilet rooms in the classrooms at both schools will also be included in the project.

“It was good news and lots of good stuff,” Hayden said at the Board of Selectmen meeting on Wednesday evening.

No date has been set to begin work on the project, though a groundbreaking ceremony is in the works, according to school officials.
