GREENWICH, CT — Two New York men accused of "mail fishing" from mailboxes on West Putnam Avenue were arrested Monday morning, police said. Officers were notified of the incident around 6 a.m. and that the suspects were driving a red Honda Civic with a New Jersey license plate, according to a statement from police.

Officers later located and stopped the vehicle on Field Point Road and Brookside Drive. While investigating, officers detected the smell of marijuana and noticed items typically used to construct mail fishing devices in plain view within the vehicle, police said.

Officers subsequently searched the vehicle, located a mail fishing device in the glove compartment and arrested both men, police said. Officers also located similar devices in the area where the men were accused of mail fishing.

According to police, mail fishing involves lowering a string coated in a sticky substance into a mailbox and removing mail containing checks or personal financial information from the box.

Last week, Greenwich Police Lieutenant Martin O'Reilly was recognized for his role in the arrest of several suspects accused of mail fishing in a separate incident in town.

In July, police said they were investigating a fishing incident that occurred outside 41 West Putnam Avenue and advised any resident who had placed mail inside the box that it "may not reach its final destination." It is unclear if the two incidents are related.
