Lauren Redniss "92: Radioactive Art Exhibit

Lauren Redniss’ 92: Radioactive Art Exhibit

On October 6, Greenwich Academy’s Luchsinger Gallery opened an exhibition of the artwork of Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer and artist Lauren Redniss. in the Jacobs Lobby and Luchsinger Gallery.

Redniss, a GA alumna, displayed process-oriented pieces and cyanotypes – photographic ‘blueprints’ – from her book Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie, A Tale of Love and Fallout. The book, which Upper School Greenwich Academy students and faculty read this summer, combines art, science, history and literature to tell the story of the life and work of Marie Curie.

In conjunction with the Luchsinger Gallery exhibition, Redniss also visited campus to lead the Upper School’s Duff Center Symposium on October 24. As the keynote speaker, Redniss kicked off a day of breakout discussions focusing on the themes and issues raised in Radioactive. Students attended sessions with topics ranging from the science behind the cyanotype print process to film representations of nuclear annihilation. In addition to book group-type discussion, these sessions highlighted the many dimensions of Radioactive, from its visual splendor, to its whimsical storytelling, to its careful examination of scientific processes-–-which, together, work to reveal a thoughtful and multidimensional account of Curie’s life.

Redniss is also the author of Century Girl: 100 years in the Life of Doris Eaton Travis, Last Living Star of the Ziegfeld Follies, and her writing and drawing have appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times. She recently presented a solo show at the New York Public Library, and teaches at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City. She was a fellow at the Cullman Center for Scholars & Writers at the New York Public Library in 2008-2009 and became a New York Institute for the Humanities fellow in 2010.
