Fourth-grade students from North Mianus School (NMS) returning from a field trip to the State Capitol in Hartford were aboard a school bus involved in an accident on Route 91 in Middletown, Tuesday afternoon, according to Connecticut State Police.

There were 37 students and six adults aboard the bus and there are no reports of any serious injuries. “Some complained of bumps and bruises,” said state police spokesman Sgt. Shane Hassett. However, all of the students have been transported to Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, for examination along with teachers and parent chaperones, according to Greenwich Schools spokeswoman Kim Eves.

Hassett said the bus was in a collision with a car on southbound I-91 between Exits 21 and 20 in Middletown. The bus was one of two transporting the Greenwich students back home when the crash occurred about 3:40 p.m.

According to Eves, “Parents of the students were promptly notified. NMS Principal Angela Schmidt and Deputy Superintendent Ellen Flanagan are on route to the hospital. All students will be transported back to Greenwich once they have been released from the hospital.”

Initial reports said a half-dozen students were being treated for injuries.

Eves also said that fourth-grade parents may choose to drive to the hospital to bring their child home.

The second bus which was not involved in the accident, was delayed in returning to Greenwich, but arrived back at North Mianus School at approximately 5:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The students met with state Rep. Fred Camillo (R-151) tweeted “Nice day meeting with North Mianus Elementary Schoolers at the Capitol.”
