Cars Damaged When Garage Roof Collapses in Central Greenwich

Crews are working to shore up other garage structures in the downtown coop complex.

Heavy snow and water are being blamed for the partial collapse of a garage roof in a central Greenwich coop complex early Wednesday.

“It was an eight-car garage — three of the bays were completely collapse and one was partially collapsed,” according to Deputy Greenwich Fire Chief Brian Koczak. Firefighters were called to the Putnam Park complex at 41 Milbank Ave. at 5:48 a.m., Koczak said.

“Nobody was inside — there were no injuries,” Koczak added. However, the owners of three cars parked inside the garage weren’t so lucky as they were damaged by the collapse.

Koczak said contracting crews were called in to shore up that building as well as other garages on the property before snow removal could begin. “It’s basically a precaution,” Koczak said of the shoring up work. The Greenwich Fire Marshal and the Greenwich Building Department also were called to the scene.

With more rain, sleet and snow forecast overnight and into tomorrow, Koczak suggested that residents check their roofs and “if it is safe to do so, remove some of the snow or call a contractor, someone to evaluate.”

He added, “ If there are abnormal sounds coming from the structure, evacuate immediately and call someone to evaluate.”
