Coyote Seen in Greenwich

They can pose a danger to unsupervised pets.

GREENWICH, CT — A coyote was spotted on Ridgeview Avenue Tuesday evening this week.

The animal appeared to be in good condition and is known to frequent the area, according to the Greenwich Time.

Coyotes have lived in Greenwich and Connecticut for years, according to the Greenwich Conservation Commission. They are naturally afraid of humans, but behavior such as feeding them can make them lose that natural fear.

They become more territorial in the spring and may view dogs as competition. Small dogs and cats can be viewed as prey. It is important to keep an eye on pets.

Coyotes can be scared off with loud noises or other aggressive behavior such as throwing sticks and stones near them.

A full-grown coyote is 48 to 60 inches long from nose to tail and they typically weigh in at 30 to 50 pounds, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
