Ex-Greenwich Resident Charged in Child Sex Trafficking Case

According to the US Attorney's office the former resident was involved in a sex trafficking ring involving minors.

Two people including a former Greenwich resident are the focus of a federal investigation into a sex trafficking ring involving children.

In a statement released Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly, announced that Wellington Brown, also known as “Jamal,” 25, a Jamaican citizen formerly residing in Hartford, and Sheena Dume, 21, formerly of Stratford and Greenwich, were charged by indictment with sex trafficking of a minor and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor. The Indictment was returned on July 22. Brown was arraigned on the indictment yesterday, and Dume was arraigned on Aug. 7.

According to the criminal indictment, between June 2013 and February 2014, Brown and Dume conspired with each other and with other individuals to recruit, entice, harbor, transport, provide, obtain, and maintain five different minor victims, knowing that the minors would be caused to engage in a commercial sex act.

Brown and Dume were both arrested in Glen Burnie, MD, on July 30, 2014. They were appeared before a United States Magistrate Judge in Baltimore who ordered them transferred to Connecticut. Dume was arraigned on Aug. 7, and was ordered detained. Brown was arraigned Tuesday, and also was ordered detained pending trial.

The U.S. Attorney’s office did not respond to requests for additional information, including information about Dume and her involvement in Greenwich.

If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum term of imprisonment of life imprisonment and a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.

The case is assigned to United States District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven.

The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the Milford Police Department and the Stratford Police Department. Daly recognized the significant assistance provided by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families, and its Human Ant-Trafficking Response Team (“HART”). The case is being prosecuted by AUSA’s David Novick and Mark Silverman.
