A home under renovation was damaged by an early Tuesday morning fire the cause of which remains under investigation by Greenwich fire marshals.

Deputy Greenwich Fire Chief Keith Millette said the alarm was first reported between 2:30 and 3 a.m. when a neighbor called 911. “Then there were numerous calls from neighbors,” Millette said.

“There was fire showing mainly on the back and two sides of the house. A carport and deck in the rear” of the 2 1/2 story Colonial style home at 39 Edgewater Dr. in Old Greenwich, were destroyed, according to Millette. “There’s a lot of heat, smoke and water damage to the interior,” Millette added.

The unoccupied home was under renovation and the work appeared to be nearly complete with windows, Sheetrock and paint in place, Millette also said.

At 8 a.m., Greenwich fire marshals were still at the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire. “It does not appear to be suspicious. The marshals will be interviewing the contractors who were doing work over the weekend,” Millette said.

No injuries were reported. Thirty firefighters from Greenwich Fire, and the Cos Cob, Sound Beach and Byram Volunteer departments responded to the scene. “We got it under control fairly quickly,” Millette said. “But it’s unfortunate for the homeowners.”
