Reyes' supervisors alerted police in early July that funds were missing from the department, at which time detectives began the investigation that led to her arrest.

"After receiving a report of missing money from Reyes' supervisors, Greenwich Police Detectives conducted a lengthy investigation which determined that Reyes had stolen petty cash entrusted to her for a program administered by the Department of Human Services," wrote Capt. Robert Berry, of the Detective Division, in a statement.

Added Lt. David Nemecek, "The detectives did a lot of work on it."

Specifically how Reyes allegedly stole the cash was not disclosed, but she is the second Greenwich employee this year to stand accused of stealing town funds. In June, former Parking Services Department Accounting Clerk Michael D. Gordon was charged in connection with the theft of more than $11,000 from the town.

Reyes was released after posting a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Sept. 27.
