Greenwich Coronavirus Updates: 3 Town Residents Die From Virus

A total of seven patients have died at Greenwich Hospital, however not all of those patients were Greenwich residents, town officials said.

GREENWICH, CT — A total of three Greenwich residents have died as a result of the new coronavirus, town officials announced Wednesday. During a press update late Wednesday afternoon, First Selectman Fred Camillo said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had informed his office an 87-year-old man, a 96-year-old man and a 101-year-old woman, all residents of Greenwich, had died due to the virus.

Camillo also said a total of seven patients at Greenwich Hospital have died as a result of the virus, also referred to as COVID-19, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.The first selectman emphasized that not all of those patients are Greenwich residents, as the hospital draws in patients from other municipalities in Connecticut and Westchester County, N.Y.

"We are saddened by the loss of any life, no matter what their age is," Camillo said during the press update. "Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers are with the families of those three residents."

Camillo also noted that people of all ages are dying as a result of the virus and now was not the time for residents to "take their foot off the brake" in regards to staying home and social distancing. (To sign up for Greenwich breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

"This is no joke," Camillo said. "Social distancing and physical distancing is really helping, but we're going to see more deaths sadly; just how many depends on us."

As of Wednesday, April 1, there are 150 Greenwich residents who have tested positive for the virus, according to the town's health director, Caroline Baisley. That number is up from the 137 positive cases reported on Tuesday.

Also as of noon on Wednesday, there were 95 COVID-19 positive patients being treated at Greenwich Hospital in several different units, Camillo said. This number reflects both patients who live in Greenwich and patients who live in other areas of Connecticut and Westchester County, N.Y.

A total of 1,819 outpatient swabs have been taken at the hospital testing site to date, of which 448 results were positive, Camillo said.
