Greenwich Election Results 2021: Republicans Win Key Races

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Republicans scored key victories up and down the ticket in Tuesday's municipal election, according to unofficial results.

First Selectman Fred Camillo was re-elected to a second term as Greenwich's chief elected official, defeating Democratic challenger Bill Kelly by a wide margin. According to unofficial tallies from the Greenwich Registrar of Voters, Camillo amassed 10,794 votes to Kelly's 4,894.

Additionally, Camillo's running mate, Selectperson Lauren Rabin, was also re-elected to the Board of Selectmen with 9,923 votes.

Democrat Janet Stone McGuigan will round out the board, having collected the third highest vote total out of the Selectmen field with 6,322. Selectperson Jill Oberlander did not run for re-election.

In other races:

Heather Smeriglio won re-election as Tax Collector over Democrat Trevor Crow, according to unofficial results from the Greenwich Registrar of Voters.

The Town Clerk position was open for the first time in 30 years, as Republican Carmella Budkins announced her retirement early this year. But it appears as if the job will stay in the Budkins family, as Carmella's daughter, Jackie, won against Democrat challenger Mary "Molly" Saleeby.

Democrats Donnie Romeo and Dawn Fortunato ran for Constable, as did Republicans John J. Thompson, Martin C. Blanco, Charles Eddie Thivierge and Donna Maloney. Residents could vote for up to four.

The Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) race wasn't competitive, as all six Democrats and all six Republicans were elected to the board.

The BET will consist of: Democratic incumbents Leslie Moriarty, Miriam Kreuzer, Laura Erickson, David Weisbrod, Jeffrey Ramer and newcomer Stephen Selbst; and Republican incumbents Karen Fassuliotis, Bill Drake, Leslie L. Tarkington and newcomers Dan Ozizmir, Michael Basham and Nisha Arora.

The only question Tuesday was who would win the all-important tie-breaking vote; the party with most cumulative votes gets that right.

According to RTC Chair Dan Quigley, the Republicans scored 57 percent of the vote.

Republicans have had control of the board since 2019. Prior to that, Democrats won the tie breaking vote in 2017 for the first time in recorded history.

The race for seats on the Greenwich Board of Education was too close to call Tuesday night, however, Republican Michael-Joseph Mercanti-Anthony secured one of the two GOP seats. Cody Kittle and Megan Galletta are separated by just 36 votes, with Kittle in the lead, according to unoficial results from the CT Secretary of State.

Democrats Kathleen Stowe, an incumbent, and newcomer Laura Kostin ran unchallenged and will be seated on the board.

Democrats William Grad, Howard Richman and Joseph Huley ran for the Board of Assessment Appeals. Christopher "Kit" Mill, Jeff Reardon and Mark Pruner are the Republican Candidates. Residents could vote for up to three.

There are also a number of Representative Town Meeting (RTM) spots up for grabs in each voting district. Voters in each district could vote for up to 20 candidates. Only a handful of districts feature competitive races (2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12). Results were not known as of late Tuesday night.
