UPDATE: A Day Before Her Birthday, A Stamford Woman Is Killed by Metro-North Train

Update: 10:20 a.m., Aug. 8:

A Stamford woman retrieving a bag she dropped onto train tracks was killed the day before her 29th birthday when she was struck by a Metro-North express train passing through the Cos Cob station on Friday morning.

“She was sitting on the platform with her legs dangling over the edge. At some point she drops her purse. She’s out on the tracks retrieving the bag and a train is coming and she is hit,” Metro-North spokesman Sal Arena said Saturday.

The victim was Tamar A. Louis, 28, of Ivy Street in Stamford, according to Arena. “She would have turned 29 today (Saturday),” Arena said.

An autopsy will be performed by the office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police are continuing their investigation, Arena added.

Some witnesses told police that the train sounded its horn as Louis sat on the platform edge. The horn startled her, causing her to drop the bag and then hop onto the tracks to retrieve it as the express train approached, according to Arena.

Update: 4:18 p.m., Aug 7:

A 28-year-old Connecticut woman was fatally injured when she was struck by a Metro-North Railroad express train passing through the Cos Cob station shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday.

“She was trying to retrieve a handbag or wallet when she was struck by the train,” Meredith Daniels, a Metro-North spokesman said Friday afternoon. Daniels said the name of the victim and her hometown will not be released until Monday, pending police locating and notifying her family.

The engineer of the express train that left Greenwich and was due in Stamford, “did sound the horn. … It happened pretty quickly, I am sure it was a matter of seconds from when he sounded the horn and she was struck,” Daniels said. She estimated the train was traveling at about 45 mph.

Deputy Greenwich Fire Chief Keith Millette said that crews responded to a call for a rescue at the station. “The person was under the train and we had to work with the MYA is shutting down train traffic and power,” Millette said. “GEMS (Greenwich Emergency Medical Service) arrive and assessed the situation and confirmed she was deceased.”

Daniels said the express train passengers were delayed in reaching Stamford by 30 to 40 minutes. Train traffic along the New Haven line, including the New Canaan and Waterbury branches was delayed by about a half-hour until the scene was reopened after 12 p.m.

Update: 12:06 p.m.

The woman struck and killed by a Metro-North Railroad train at the Cos Cob station Friday morning reportedly dropped her wallet onto the tracks and went to retrieve it when she was struck by the train.

A medical examiner is on the scene, according to Hearst Connecticut Media Group which is reporting an investigator said the unidentified woman had dropped her wallet onto the tracks.

Metro-North reported at 12:10 p.m. that train delays are now on or close to schedule and that service to the New Canaan Branch resumed with the 11:58 a.m. train from Stamford.

Update: 10:22 a.m.
A woman was struck and killed by a Metro-North Railroad train at the Cos Cob station Friday morning, according to a Metro-North spokesman.

“We don’t have much information yet but somebody was hit and killed,” said railroad spokesman Sal Arena.

The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. and involved a train that was inbound to Grand Central Terminal, according to Arena. Metropolitan Transit Authority Police, Greenwich Fire and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service personnel responded to the scene.

The victim’s identity was not released.

Rail service has 30 to 35-minute delays.

Update: 10:07 a.m.

A person was struck by a train Friday morning in the area of the Cos Cob station, according to a report.

The condition of the unidentified victim was not immediately known, according to Hearst Connecticut Media Group.

Metro-North is reporting delays of 15 to 20 minutes on the New Haven line.

Greenwich Fire Department units report they are “operating at a rescue on the Metro North tracks in area of Cos Cob.”

GFD reported via Twitter about 9:40 a.m.: “Units looking to confirm power is shut off to tracks and overhead power lines.

Metro-North Railroad is reporting that “New Haven Line service is currently experiencing delays of 10-15 minutes due to police activity in the vicinity of Cos Cob.”

And if that’s not enough, northbound traffic on I-95 is backed up from Greenwich to Darien because of a crash in the area of Exit 10.
