The Staples girls basketball kept its slim FCIAC playoff hopes alive Monday following a bizarre 50-47 victory over Greenwich, but will need help to get in.

The Wreckers had to hold on Monday despite outscoring Greenwich 19-0 in the first quarter and leading 30-11 at the half.

The Cardinals pulled within 37-33 entering the final period after outscoring Staples 20-7 in the third quarter.

Nikki Bukovsky scored 20 points and Emily Stein added nine for the Wreckers, who improved to 11-8 and 10-7.

Caroline Barrett scored 19 points and Jenny Cepedes added 14 for the Cardinals, who dropped to 4-15 and 3-14.

With Darien defeating Fairfield Warde 49-42 and St. Joseph topping Stamford 54-36 on Monday, the Blue Wave, Black Knights, Mustangs and Wreckers all with enter the final day of the season with 10-7 league records.

However, the winner of the Stamford-Warde game cliches a spot and Darien can secure a berth with a victory over winless Bassick. To get in, Staples must win at Ridgefield and somehow hope Darien loses to the Lions.
